Chapter 3 Coordinate Geometry

NCERT Solutions Class 9 Maths Chapter 3 Coordinate Geometry

In NCERT class 9 maths chapter 3 students are exposed to coordinate geometry whereby points on a plane are located using an ordered pair of numbers referred to as coordinates. Class 9 maths chapter 3 has major concepts like the Cartesian plane, plotting a point on the plane, and a segment between two points with the help of distance formula and many more key topics.

In NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Maths, all the exercise questions given in the textbook have been solved in an easy to understand manner so students can grasp the concepts easily. These class 9 maths chapter 3 solutions are designed by some of India’s best subject matters from ALLEN who have taught thousands of students over the years and helped them reach their dream college.

When solving these questions, students will effectively develop their understanding of coordinate geometry – an essential area for exam success and further competitive exams. The NCERT Solutions Class 9 Maths Chapter 3 contain elaborations and examples to enable students to clear clarifications and practice well for the exams.

2.0What Will Students Learn in Chapter 3: Coordinate Geometry?

  • The definition of the coordinate plane and the x & y axes and how to locate points using ordered pairs of x & y coordinates.
  • What the quadrants of the coordinate plane represent and how to determine the coordinates of a point when in which quadrant it is located.
  • How to work and solve distance formulas when finding the distance between two points.
  • The idea of the midpoint of two points as well as how one can find it using the midpoint formula.
  • The connection between algebra and geometry, familiarizing with the concept of how equations can be used to describe lines on the coordinate plane.
  • Methods of graphing linear equations, its slopes and intercepts.
  • An explanation of how co-ordinate geometry can be used to solve simple problems and how shapes can be understood in a rectangular space.

Exercise : 3.1

  • How will you describe the position of a table lamp on your study table to another person? Sol.
The position of the table lamp is at a distance of a units from the left edge of the top of the table and at a distance b units above the bottom edge of the top of the table. We have marked the bottom edge as the line Ax and the left edge as the line Ay. Here Ay ⊥ Ax. We measure all distances along Ax and Ay from the corner A. The position of the lamp can be described as ( a,b ).
  • (Street Plan) : A city has two main roads which cross each other at the centre of the city. These two roads are along the NorthSouth direction and East-West direction. All other streets of the city run parallel to these roads and are 200 m apart. There are about 5 streets in each direction. Using 1 cm=200 m, draw a model of the city on your notebook. Represent roads/streets by single lines. There are many cross-streets in your model. A particular cross-street is made by two streets, one running in the NorthSouth direction and another in the EastWest direction. Each cross-street is referred to in the following manner: If the 2nd street running in the North-South direction and 5th in the East-West direction meet at some crossing, then we will call this cross-street ( 2,5 ). Using this convention, find: (i) How many cross-streets can be referred to as (4,3). (ii) How many cross-streets can be referred to as (3,4). Sol.
    (i) There is only one cross-street referred to (4,3). (ii) There is only one cross-street referred to (3,4).

Exercise : 3.2

  • Write the answer of each of the following questions: (i) What is the name of horizontal and the vertical lines drawn to determine the position of any point in the Cartesian plane? (ii) What is the name of each part of the plane formed by these two lines? (iii) Write the name of the point where these two lines intersect. Sol. (i) The x -axis and y -axis (ii) Quadrants (iii) The origin
  • In the fig., write the following : (i) The coordinates of B. (ii) The coordinates of C . (iii) The point identified by the coordinates ( −3,−5 ). (iv) The point identified by the coordinates (2,−4). (v) The abscissa of the point D . (vi) The ordinate of the point H . (vii) The coordinates of the point L . (viii) The coordinates of the point M .
    Sol. (i) (−5,2) (ii) (5,−5) (iii) E (iv) G (v) 6 (vi) -3 (vii) (0,5) (viii) (−3,0)

Frequently Asked Questions

The coordinates of a point are represented as an ordered pair (x, y), where 'x' is the distance from the y-axis (horizontal position), and 'y' is the distance from the x-axis (vertical position).

To graph a linear equation, you plot points that satisfy the equation on the coordinate plane and then draw a line through them.

A coordinate plane is divided into four quadrants: Quadrant I: (+, +) Quadrant II: (−, +) Quadrant III: (−, −) Quadrant IV: (+, −)
